Pool Types
The most common choices of pool design are the concrete tile pool and the liner pool. Below, we provide an overview of the construction process involved in these two most popular choices.
Other pool types include above ground, gunnite, fibre glass and swim spa pools. For further information on pool types please get in touch.
Concrete Tile Pools
Concrete tile pools are often chosen for the construction of indoor pools, easily allowing for the under floor pipe work and concrete oversite to be incorporated into the design.
Firstly, a hole is excavated to the required depth and a shingle layer deposited. This is covered with visqueen (thick polythene) and steel reinforcement in preparation for the concrete base.

After the base of the pool has been concreted (incorporating the main drains), blocks are then laid to form the walls of the pool.
Steel reinforcement and required pool fittings (surface water skimmers and return pipes) are installed into the wall cavities. The cavities are then ready to be filled with concrete.

The walls of the pool are rendered and the floor of the pool is finished with a sand and cement screed (surface).
The pool is completed by laying appropriate coping (bricks/paving which are laid sideways at the top of the walls) and other tiling. Finally, the entire pool is finished with mosaic tiles.
Liner Pools
Liner pools can be a popular choice for outdoor pools and can often work out as an economical option.
Again, first of all, a hole is excavated to the desired depth. A foundation is then laid in preparation for either a concrete block or panel type shell. During the construction of the shell, the required pool fittings (surface water skimmers and return pipes) are incorporated.
Appropriate rendering is applied to the pool floor and walls. Coping stones are laid onto the the finished pool walls. Steps or Roman end bays can be added as required.

The entire pool shell is then fitted with a PVC watertight bag liner which is factory made to fit the precise dimensions of the pool. The lining is available in a wide range of colours and styles. The bag liner is guaranteed for one to two years with guidance and restrictions on the allowable water temperature.
Optionally, a reinforced liner (cut and heat sealed on site) can be fitted. This can provide a guarantee of up to ten years and can allow for higher water temperatures to be tolerated. This also comes in a wide range of available colours and styles.
Samples of pool liner style are shown below.
